Where is Geraldine?
The gateway to the Southern Lakes - Geraldine lies at the heart of the Canterbury region, at the foot of the wild Southern Alps, on the east coast of the South Island.  Geraldine is the gateway to the lakes in the central Mackenzie Basin and the beginning of the Starlight Highway to Tekapo's world renowned UNESCO Aoraki McKenzie International Dark Sky Reserve.  Geraldine has arguably the best private observatory in New Zealand which is open to the public.

Timeless History
Geraldine was discovered in the 1840s, but it wasn't until 1854 that Samual Hewlings built the first bark hut in Talbot Street.  He married a Maori woman, Nga Hei, and the totara tree which he planted to mark the birth of his daughter still stand on the site today in Talbot Street, opposite the Police Station.  Read more
