NZ Golf Women's Autumn Foursomes2011 - NZ Golf Women's Autumn Foursomes
Geraldine District Golf Course with the support of its local community and township - less than 4000 - hosted one of the best ever NZ Golf Women's Autumn Foursomes, according to tournament director Denise Langdon.
The event field is limited to 64 pairs, 128 players, but entries received topped 190 from around the country. This meant 70 players had to be balloted out according to the tournament condition which restricts players to the best combined handicaps.
"This was a remarkable achievement for a town and club that is off the main track albeit that it does cater for tourists and is well known as a great holiday location in the heart of the South Island" Denise Langdon of PaR NZ Golfing Holidays noted. "I was blown away by the response which was indicative of the whole week hosted by the club and community. There was a total club effort to get the course and clubhouse ready, all catering including the final dinner for over 130, was done by volunteers, and literally the club came alive with the final night theme and their generosity over the week. Everywhere you walked in the town, locals acknowledged you as the 'golfing ladies' and were incredibly friendly".
Leading local business, Barkers of Geraldine, took up the opportunity to sponsor the event. They produce an impressive range of fruit and assorted food products which is exported both nationwide and internationally. It was noted by General Manager, Michael Barker at the closing ceremony, how much the township and local businesses had profited from the tournament and players visiting the area.
While the local club hopes of a winner were dashed when Geraldine GC treasurer Ginny Bolderston, paired with sister Jayne Douglas from Te Anau lost in the semi-finals on the 18th hole, it was a great week for the greater South Canterbury golf area.
Overall winner and holders of the 2011 NZ Golf Autumn Foursomes Cup were the combination of South Canterbury Representative Bev Green paired with Lyn Blakie. Both are members of Pleasant Point GC. Runners up were Marie Pollard (Wyndham) and Sandra Speden (Gore). The other semi-finalist pairing were Carol Brand (Gleniti) and Vicki Moore (Ashburton).
